After wowing audiences around the world, the international dance sensation, Momentum is now playing on the Gold Coast at Jupiters Hotel Casino. The Queensland engagement is all the more sweet for one of the performers within the ensemble cast. Spike Levy hails from Melbourne, where he studied Musical Theatre, and the opportunity to present the production to Australian audiences is particularly rewarding.
When you tour, you are living like a snail; going from one hotel to the next with your house on your back. We enjoy being on stage but there is so much going on behind the scenes. My dream was to perform in New York and I got to do that with Mayumana which was unbelievable. It was a dream come true.
Premiering in Madrid in 2008, Momentum is the seventh production to be developed by the Israeli-based creative team known as Mayumana. Co-creators Eylon Nuphar and Boaz Berman began devising the first Mayumana show in 1996. The company, which has a home base in Jaffa just south of Tel Aviv, has become a global phenomenon having played to almost four million people on multiple continents.
The show is for everyone, there is something for everyone. With Momentum you re seeing every discipline including music, dancing, technology and social networks. So many different countries and cultures have come together to create one show; so there s so much fusion of talent. It makes for a very exciting show for all ages, said Spike.
The rhythm is the glue of the show. Without rhythm we don t have a show. It s based on time and time moving forward and back, with everything going on stage we are playing with rhythm and timing. It s a vital part of the show.
I auditioned for Mayumana and thankfully quality accommodation bruges got in. It s a great company to be a part of. Performing with Mayumana I get to do everything. My background is drumming but I m also a trained hip hop dancer and musical theatre is important to me so singing, acting, dancing. With Mayumana I get to do all of them, said Spike.
