Ah, Madrid. The city where many people start their holiday in the Iberian peninsula. If you re visiting in the summer, you might find the weather in the capital city of Spain will be too hot for walking around the city. With a temperature that is frequently around 40 degrees Celsius (over 100 Fahrenheit), seeing some of Madrid s most beautiful fountains is an excellent choice when the heat is unbearable!
First of all, if you re booking your trip to the capital of Spain from June to August, make sure that you are going to chose only from those hotels in Madrid that have air conditioning. The symbol of the city, a true trademark and a remarkable work of art: the fountain of Cibeles, part of the square with the same name, is a landmark not just for the tourist seeing Madrid for the first time, but also serves as a popular meeting place for locals. The fountain was built at the end of the 18th century near the Buenavista Palace, but in the late 19th century it was moved to its present location. It represents a deity, a protector of the people, on a cart pulled by powerful lions.
Built next to Cibeles, the fountain of Neptune has also been moved and can now be found in the marvelous Plaza de Canovas del Castillo. It depicts the God of the Sea, Neptune, in a chariot pulled by sea horses, surrounded by dolphins and seals. The work of art, symbolizing sea storms, has uncertain credits, since the original sculptor, Juan Pascual de Mena, died before finishing his masterpiece.
A unique statue dedicated to the devil itself, The Fountain of the Fallen Angel is situated in the Retiro gardens and it was inaugurated at the end of the 19th century. Depicting the fall of Lucifer from Heaven, this amazing statue underlines the tension and the drama of the Biblical moment. Apart from the amazing view, you should not miss the opportunity of taking your picture with the devil.
The Fuenticillas, also known as the Four Fountains of Prado or the Little Fountains are ideally located between the Prado Museum and the Botanical Gardens, serving as a great spot to stop in between cruise deal the two attractions.
