No one climbs Mount Kilimanjaro alone, and no one knows that better than the founders of WHOA Travel . Women High on Adventure creators Allison Fleece and Danielle Thornton are travel-loving friends who met while climbing apartment rentals honolulu Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, in February 2013. Tackling apartment rentals honolulu one of the world’s toughest summits together was so life-altering, they knew they wanted to share the experience with others. So upon returning to New York, they quit their jobs and started an adventure travel company with a mission to motivate women to step out of their comfort zones … and onto the tallest freestanding mountain in the world.
In the spirit of empowering women, WHOA Travel led a group of 28 women from 9 countries to the roof of Africa on International Women’s Day earlier this year. Not only did all 28 women make it to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, apartment rentals honolulu but they even danced their way to the summit . Led by the mountain s first local female guide, the group raised more than $10,000 to support women’s educational programs in Kenya and Tanzania. Now, Allison and Danielle are gearing up to lead another apartment rentals honolulu group of women to the summit on International Women’s Day in 2015 .
We caught up with daring adventuresses between climbing mountains to find out what other WHOA-inspiring trips they’re leading, how their high-altitude dance-party apartment rentals honolulu tradition began, and the surprising item they never head back to Mount Kilimanjaro without apartment rentals honolulu (hint: it’s not a power bar).
Allison : Honestly, I blame it all on Kilimanjaro. I had it in my head that I wanted to hike that mountain, and after a group of us got together to actually hike it, we were so transformed apartment rentals honolulu by the experience, we couldn t stop there. That s when Danielle and I got to talking. We were hell-bent apartment rentals honolulu on bringing women together to take on more adventures around the world, and we knew how much good could come from this. The idea for WHOA was solid, and it was a no-brainer when the time came to launch that we would need to quit our jobs to focus 100% on this new journey! I haven t looked back since.
Danielle: It’s all about following your heart — there’s nothing to lose and everything to gain when you do that! Allison and I were both at the same point in our lives, where we knew we wanted to do work that was more meaningful to us; we just didn’t apartment rentals honolulu know that it was Kilimanjaro that was going to lead us to it! We’ve gained so much perspective about people and the world through adventure travel and running our own company — it’s the kind of life experience and wisdom you can’t get sitting behind apartment rentals honolulu a desk.
Danielle: You can always count on an epic adventure and a unique giving-back project that connects with local women, but it’s really the energy and camaraderie of the group that makes all of our adventures extra-special and such a success. We have incredible women from all walks of life and all over the world on our trips. In fact, last year on Kili, we had 9 countries represented! Everyone is laughing and supporting one another; it’s what makes conquering challenges possible and a whole heck of a lot more fun!
Allison: We definitely share the same kooky sense of humor, open-mindedness and desire apartment rentals honolulu for adventure. When it comes to running a business, we share such similar views, it s almost scary! Ultimately, we believe in doing. Instead of always waiting until the right time for something (when is it ever the “right” time?), we both value proactiveness. We get out there and make things happen, and that is something that is very essential to WHOA and our success so far. When we say we are going to do something, we do it. From a differing perspective, I m definitely the talker, apartment rentals honolulu the one most customers will chat with leading up to a trip, and the extrovert of the 2 of us Danielle is the brilliant creative mind, a self-proclaimed introvert, but she can fool you as an extrovert and, on any WHOA adventure, will most likely be seen with a camera apartment rentals honolulu in hand.
Danielle: There’s something about mountains that really gets people. The challenge of reaching a goal and making it to the top of a place where few people dare to go is so alluring and symbolic. Kilimanjaro is Africa’s tallest mountain, so you earn serious bragging rights for making it to the summit, but it’s absolutely doable! apartment rentals honolulu You don’t need to be a technical climber or superstar athlete to do it; you just need lots of heart!
Allison:  We believe in experiential giving, in sharing experiences with people. We do this by sponsoring local women to hike and adventure with us. Sharing experiences with local women has become a unique and special way for everyone to learn and empower each other through interaction and personal connection. When we are on Kilimanjaro, and we hike with women who have lived at the foothills of the mountain their entire lives, it makes everyone s experience more authentic and real. Not to mention, local women show us their homes from 19,340 feet high — if that isn t empowering, we don t know what is!
Danielle:  Like a lot of things apartment rentals honolulu with WHOA, it started the first time we did Kilimanjaro together. There’s a beautiful spot near Shira Camp where you get one of your first views of Uhuru Peak from the trail — it’s so exhilarating! We were so pumped up (or maybe getting loopy from the altitude already) that we did what anyone would do in that situation and busted out dancing. The rest is history! Since then, making dance videos has become a tradition on all our adventures. We’ve gotten more elaborate with our choreography and moves, and we keep trying to one-up ourselves. Our next goal is to get Ellen DeGeneres to show up in one of our dance videos!
Allison: If you want to do it, you can. Ultimately, apartment rentals honolulu it comes down to mind over matter. Kilimanjaro is incredibly mental and a very rewarding experience. Of course, there are obvious tips, such as staying in shape and breaking in your boots, but from a personal perspective, our biggest tip is simple: If you want to do it, you can.
Allison: Lots! But probably the thing that surprised us the most is how special the mountain is. Kilimanjaro brings people together from all walks of life and all corners apartment rentals honolulu of this world in a very unique way. The mountain doesn t care who you are back in your everyday life. It will break you down and build you back up and will teach you things about yourself you never knew before. It s a humbling experience to climb Kilimanjaro, one that will stay with you for years to come, if not a lifetime.
Allison:  Cheez-Its! They got me up Kilimanjaro the first time I summited. After losing my appetite, when nothing else seemed appealing, Cheez-Its were the only thing I could stand to eat. Come to think of it, I may very well owe my life to those little
