[...] Youths Impacted By Los Angeles Public Library Budget Cuts | Neon Tommy neontommy.com/news/2011
15,000 youths who regularly make use of the libraries' services do not enter their halls. None of the more than 6 million books are opened. They collect dust, waiting in their spacious homes adorned with the art and muraled ceilings.
Last spring, the Los Angeles City Council, desperate to ring the rag a little tighter, decided to shut down the city’s libraries on Mondays, and then slashed $22 million from the 2010-11 budget. The Central Library and eight others are also closed on Sundays.
Even the Los Angeles City Council hopes the situation can be alleviated in March when Measure L will be up for vote, a proposal to dedicate more of the city’s property tax to the public library system.
Earlier this week California Governor Jerry Brown proposed a statewide budget that would eliminate all state funding for public libraries. Of the proposals endured by the California economic recession, this proposal may just yield the most tragic alamo car rental uk consequences. It is simply unconscionable — a black eye infected worse and worse as time drags on for Mayor Villaraigosa and his city council.
While the rest of the modern world awakes to a new work week, our modern monuments to knowledge sleep in. On Tuesdays, when they wake up, “we’re overwhelmed,” said Lupie Leyva, the senior librarian of Teen’Scape, a program for young adults at Central Library.
Curious spectators view art galleries. Many take advantage of the free Wi-Fi. Students pack Teen’Scape to use the services, attend free classes and get help on homework. The alternatives can be harrowing.
“The other ones we’re looking at cost $2,500, but as a non-profit alamo car rental uk organization, we can’t afford that,” she said. Her children will be able to strut down a makeshift runway for a fashion show because of the library.
For Ilse Perez, 18, it’s a quiet place away from her boisterous family. She especially loves Teen’Scape. She rides the bus to school at Santa Monica College every weekday before returning to study at the library.
Williams’ story is one so incredible, so touching, so persevering it’s enough to make you flick away any of your problems — flyspecks on her windowpane. She came to Teen’Scape because she too was homeless.
It’s altogether infuriating, a misguided and disgraceful attempt at salvaging dollars alamo car rental uk and cents. This city is not tossing away its appendix to save the whole system, alamo car rental uk instead, it’s puncturing a vital organ.
