15,000 youths who regularly make use of the libraries' services do not enter their halls. None of the more than 6 million books are opened. They collect dust, waiting in their spacious homes adorned with the art and muraled ceilings.
Last spring, the Los Angeles City Council, desperate to ring the rag a little tighter, decided to shut down the city’s libraries on Mondays, and then slashed $22 million from the 2010-11 budget. The Central Library and eight others are also closed on Sundays.
Even the Los Angeles City Council hopes the situation can be alleviated in March when Measure L will be up for vote, a proposal to dedicate more of the city’s property tax to the public library system.
Earlier this week California Governor Jerry Brown proposed a statewide budget that would eliminate all state funding for public libraries.
