Cox noted, We're 300 miles away from Atlanta, in other words a redundant hub, and Atlanta is a much bigger market and a much bigger airport so it's very difficult for Memphis to compete with Atlanta. It does make it difficult; we're going through Atlanta right now to Colorado Springs, he said, so a direct flight is hard to come by these days, for Memphis flyers. While the news is a blow for Memphis International, Cox said it could be good news in the long term for bringing more low-cost carriers to the area. The good news on this is that as Delta gets smaller travel packages it allows us to recruit other airlines coming to the Memphis market that will compete and bring in lower fares, he said. Delta says the 230 employees that will be let go will receive furloughs or retirement packages depending on seniority. Also, keep in mind Southwest is still scheduled to come to Memphis in November.
