But how many facilities can sink a pipe into a parking lot, tap into more than enough energy to supply year-round heating needs, and just maybe have enough left over to generate much of the site's electricity?

Electricity generation could be the company's next project. But the technology is improving quickly: Parker is hopeful that a so-called "binary cycle" power plants might work. Rather than spinning a turbine by boiling water into steam, these systems use special gases that transform from fluid to gas at room temperatures.

At first, the drill came up dry, raising the specter of a costly error. Down below, the water re-absorbs heat from the earth, to be recycled again and again.
