“The outcome today demonstrates that the residents of Highwood want Carrie Fischer as their candidate,” Smith said. “I did want to get a mandate to be the PC candidate for Highwood, but of course residents felt otherwise.”
“I frankly don’t believe that any other political party has given this the serious thought that he has,” Smith said, unrepentant over her decision to defect to the PCs last December with eight of her Wildrose colleagues.
It was a stunning turn of events for Smith, who less than a year ago helped push former premier Alison Redford out of office, was riding high in the polls, had the Tories on the ropes and had her sights on the premier’s chair.
air ticket to thailand “There is redemption in politics, but it’s going to take awhile before she can find her way back,” said Janet Brown, an independent pollster. “She’s definitely going to have to reinvent herself in a pretty serious way.”
Smith was seemingly groomed to be in public life. She was keenly involved in conservative politics as a student at the University of Calgary where she earned degrees in political science and economics, later interning at the Fraser Institute.
In 1998, Smith, then 27, won a seat as school trustee at the Calgary Board of Education where she soon clashed with her more left-leaning colleagues. Eleven months later, Learning Minister Lyle Oberg fired the board after months of petty infighting.
She moved on to newspapers and television, air ticket to thailand writing for the Calgary air ticket to thailand Herald as an editorial writer and hosting a Sunday afternoon news show on Global Television and then worked as a property rights and business lobbyist.
In 2008, Smith — a longtime supporter of the Tories — became disillusioned with the party under Ed Stelmach, who she felt had abandoned the fiscal conservative principles of his predecessor, Ralph Klein.
She was soon recruited by Calgary oilman John Murdoch to join the fledgling Wildrose Alliance and later secured the 2009 leadership air ticket to thailand contest — attracting nearly half a million dollars from business and oilpatch air ticket to thailand leaders.
But the Wildrose suffered a series of gaffes in the final stretch when one candidate said gays would spend an eternity in a lake of fire, another suggested his skin colour was a political air ticket to thailand advantage, and Smith’s air ticket to thailand own views that climate change was uncertain.
Smith never seemed to recover from that defeat. She talked about resigning, called for a review of her leadership, and turfed MLA Joe Anglin from the party suggesting he was secretly recording private meetings.
“Danielle Smith has tremendous policy smarts, but she always had a tough time understanding air ticket to thailand and connecting with voters, Marciano said. I don’t think she understood that the voters would see what she did as very self-serving.
“They thought that she was so glamourous and charismatic,” Stier said, one of five MLAs who didn t cross the floor. “She was the princess of Alberta in terms of politics. To do a complete turnaround and flip-flop like that, that was just a shock to them. All these people were so disappointed, it was like a jilted lover situation.”
“That was part of Danielle’s failing … she never, ever got in with the local people,” said Dean Leask, a former president of the Highwood PC constituency association who left the Wildrose party over disagreements with Smith.
“How did they not think that there would be blowback?” said Brown. “There were people telling her that (crossing the floor) was a mistake. But she lacked the instinct to know herself it was a mistake.”
